Hull Swing Bridge
Waagner-Biro has built many swing bridges for pedestrians. One, however, built by its subsidiary Qualter, Hall & Co Ltd., was a particular challenge. The task was to ensure that, even during the turning process, the bridge can be crossed. Another specification was that the bridge should reflect the maritime heritage of the city, which is why its shape is reminiscent of a whale.
The bridge’s charm is in the exciting contrast it offers to its more industrial surroundings. Two spacious pedestrian paths run along it, while its backbone is constructed from a number of platforms from which passers-by can enjoy different perspectives of the city and the river.
