Coastline Stabilisation at Jumeirah First - Groyne Construction
The objective of this project is to stabilize the Jumeirah Beach between Jumeirah Fishing Harbour and the Jumeirah Open Beach offshore breakwater. The length of this stretch of coast is about 1.6 km.
Jumeirah beach is a very popular recreational beach in Dubai, attracting a lot of beach goers. Severe errosions at Jumeirah has been a persisting problem threatening the puplic safety as well as the adjacent residential properties. The lack of beach is likley to cause flooding events in that area during Shamal storms. Consequently, strong concerns about safety of pedestrians and damage to the existing road and residential buildings during storm conditions are been rose. Further to the above erosion problem, the littoral drift lead to significant accumulation of sand at the entrance of Jumeirah Fishing Harbour, causing navigation hazard to the fishing vessels.
A solution was proposed and WBG is carrying out 2 nos. of timber groynes (the first timber groynes in Dubai) and is constructing a short breakwater at the entrance to JFH. Furthermore the existing entrance channel will be dredged to -4 DMD.
