Panel bridge for construction works at Semmering Base Tunnel
In October 2014, Waagner-Biro was awarded the contract for the delivery of a 62-metre panel steel bridge (Bailey type) to be used during the construction of the Semmering Base Tunnel. The bridge is located in Steinhaus, at the southern end of the Semmering Mountain Pass, an hour's drive from Vienna.
Construction works at the Semmering base tunnel called for the installation of a bridge across a country road. Waagner-Biro was contracted to supply a panel bridge (a modular bridge system comprising interchangeable components) for the duration of construction of approximately 8 years as part of a rental agreement. The 3.1m wide bridge accommodates a pedestrian walkway and several pipelines for discharging huge amounts of effluents from the tunnel construction site.
Designed as a continuous beam, the bridge is 60 metres long and consists of two spans of 42m and 18m. It was assembled on site and lifted into place by a mobile crane. All the works were finished in a very short time.
The panel bridge (Bailey-type) supplied by Waagner-Biro is simple to build and quick to install, and adapts easily to different spans, widths and loads, as per customers’ requirements.
Waagner-Biro also supplied the middle pier for supporting the two spans. The pier consists of standard steel panels which guarantee an optimal connection to the bridge structure.
