Valencia Bascule Bridge
For a long time, the railway bridge across the harbour in Valencia was the largest railway bascule bridge in the world. The span between the pivot points of the two halves of the bridge measures 98m, which means the harbour is accessible to most cruise liners. The mass moved is 1,000 tonnes for each half of the bridge. A bascule bridge system was chosen because
high access ramps were unsuitable in the urban area. The bridge was built for rail and road traffic.
As reliability is paramount, a hydraulic emergency drive is installed, which will provide power to the electrical controls if the public power supply and the diesel emergency generator fail simultaneously.
