The Grieg Hall in Bergen was built in the mid-1970s and is one of the most active concert halls in Scandinavia. Its architecture in the shape of a piano is one of Bergen’s most outstanding landmarks.
The Grieg Hall houses the Bergen Nasjonale Opera as well as the world-famous Filharmoniske Orkester which is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year. The opening of the jubilee season was celebrated in the refurbished concert hall on October 16th, 2014 in the presence of the minister of cultural affairs.
Waagner-Biro won the customer’s confidence through its technical and organisational competence and was awarded the contract for the refurbishment in March 2014. One of the main challenges was that the reconstruction work had to be carried out within a relatively narrow timeframe between June 23rd, 2014 and September 30th, 2014.
After the installation of a grandstand in Kristiansand, the Konserthus in Stavanger and the Kulturhus in Stjördal which are new constructions, this is Waagner-Biro’s first refurbishment of an existing system in Norway. Not only was the short availability of the construction site a great challenge, but also the refurbishment itself involving extensive dismantling, often very limited space and coordination with many other companies on site.
In order to guarantee a smooth execution of the project and meet the penalized date of completion, an experienced employee acted as local project manager who took care of coordination directly with the customer during the brief planning and design phase already and later on coordinated dismantling and installation work. The extremely positive and constructive cooperation with the customer as well as the professional project control were important contributions to the successful implementation of the project.
More than 50 flies and a CAT V4 control system were installed as well as 4 stage platforms with guiding scissors and push-pull chain drives which are also integrated in the CAT stage control system.
The customer is very satisfied with the installation. The system was not only delivered and accepted in time, the new system is user-friendlier, more flexible, designed for higher loads and easier to maintain. The CAT V4 control system allows not only for programming complicated shows within a short time, the system also offers many possibilities of remote maintenance and inspection. Possible malfunctions can be recognized at an early stage from Luxemburg and can be repaired within the shortest periods of time.
